7 Strategies for Dealing with Stress More Effectively
.
The seven (7) habits or practices, not necessarily in any order of importance because they are all important both individually and collectively, are as follows:
1. Pay attention to your breathing through the day. Developing a habit of breathing properly for optimum health and well-being
2. Eat well by consuming whole, unprocessed foods that contain the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your body needs for optimum health.
3. Sleep for 6½ - 8 hours each night.
4. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of water every day.
5. Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes each day at least five (5) days a week including both cardio and weight training into your routine.
6. Have fun and pursue a hobby that makes you feel good. (Even if it is just going to lunch with a friend or buying flowers for yourself. Do SOMETHING that makes you feel happy!)
7. Practice meditation or spend time in grateful prayer every morning for 10-20 minutes.
Please understand that
incorporating these seven (7) practices into your life daily will not eliminate
your stress. If you have a difficult work situation, the difficulty is going to
continue even if you are drinking the minimum recommended amount of water every
day, and you are getting all the sleep you need. They will improve your overall
resilience, however, so you can more proactively and effectively deal with the
events that might otherwise throw you for a loop. Incorporating these lifestyle
changes into your life will help you. You just need to give them a try to see
for yourself.

12 Reasons Why You Cannot Get a Promotion at Work
Here are
some reasons why your expectations of a work promotion are not being achieved.
1. You only do what you are told to do – nothing more, and nothing less. You are giving as
much to the company as you get back. You attitude is, “I do my job everyday. Who
do overtime when the company isn’t paying me for it?”
2. You are a Clock Watcher. You take your breaks on time, your lunch on time, and
you leave the office on time. Even if everyone including you is working on a
special project with a deadline. Even if you see your peers spending a few
minutes talking to the boss. You think it’s a waste of time, and leave. You have
things to do.
3. Your Boss considers you a follower, not a leader. - In fact, you are a leader – of the
water cooler crowd. Not a good place to be for a future supervisor.
4. You haven’t asked for a Promotion – Supervisors are not mind readers. When you are
going through your annual evaluation, have you ever indicated that you would like
to advance in the company? How about when a staff vacancy comes up.
5. You don’t participate in staff meetings – You show up late, if at all. You sit
at the table with nothing to say. You don’t even take notes. Staff meetings are
to inform, correct, and connect. Don’t you have any ideas to contribute? Why stay
silent? Your boss may think it’s because you don’t want or care to participate
or give ideas.
6. You don’t volunteer for any Special Assignments. – Special assignments give you the
opportunity to shine, stretch your knowledge of the company and show your strengths.
You conveniently have something else to do when asked to help.
7. Your web site, Blog, Articles, etc are offensive and immature. – Everything you put on the
internet is public knowledge forever. You trash your company, your work, and
some of your co-workers. Then you wonder why no one wants to go to lunch with you.
Or why your manager doesn’t give you assignments that could showcase your
talents.
8. Poor Credit, Report, Poor Driving Record. – Companies do background checks
before and during your employment. Especially if you are running for a promotion.
The promotion may entail some travel. You may be expected to travel to different
branches of the company. The job comes with a company car, but you aren’t
eligible because of your speeding tickets.
9. Work Quality is So-So. - It’s clear you put your work together as quickly and
haphazardly as you can. There are always typos and grammatical errors in your
work. Worse, you make excuses for why your work is not up to company standards.
10. You consider your Work as a Job, Not a Career. – This attitude permeates and
affects your attitude and work efforts. It means you have no expectations of
staying at the job or profession. It’s just a paycheck to you.
11. You Don’t Dress as if You are Ready to Move up in the
Company. – You wear clothes for yourself, not to represent the company.
12. You Don’t Talk to your Site Manager or Supervisor. – You don’t ask how he or she got
promoted. You don’t talk to them about your own promotion dreams or ask for
tips.
How to Change to Make Yourself Promotion Worthy:
- You have value as an employee. Take a good look at your skills and make an evaluation. List your strengths and showcase them at work. For any weaknesses, take some classes or make a plan to address those skills you know you will need in order to be considered for a promotion.
- Speak up at staff meetings. This is your time to show the company your worth, and that you are interested in seeing the company advance and prosper
- If you want a promotion, you have to stand out from the crowd in a consistently positive way. You can’t hang with the water cooler crowd every day and expect to be considered a leader
- Speak up for yourself. If there is an upper echelon position open in the company, your resume should be the first one submitted
- How do you expect to supervise your team if you are constantly late for work? If you aspire to be a supervisor, you should be the second person at the job next to your supervisor
- Work as if you take pride in what you do. Work as if you enjoy what you are doing
- Get your personal house in order. A supervisor must be a cut above the staff. If suspended due to unpaid tickets, pay them and get your driver’s license back. If possible clear up any legal matters that may be on your criminal record
- If you have a drug, prescription, or alcohol problem, don’t think no one knows about it. If you want to move up in the business world, get some help taking care of your addictions
- A company gives you a job. You have to turn it into the career you want
- Invest in a good dictionary and thesaurus. These are work tools that can help improve your correspondence and reports
- Join trade organizations and sit on a few committees. Join those organizations that your boss patronizes
- Look at how your supervisors dress. Then go shopping and buy similar clothing
- Do your work. Stay off eBay and the adult sites. Stop playing solitaire for hours, and checking your email four times a day. Meet your deadlines
- Don’t put anything on your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or MySpace account that you wouldn’t want your mother or your boss to see. What you post could be a professional career killer
- Work as if every day you are being considered for a potential promotion
Maybe what you really want is the extra money without the responsibility. One thing is clear by the negative behaviors outlined here. The employee has no loyalty to the company. He or she intends to do just enough work to keep the job. If staff layoffs are needed, unless you improve your attitude and work, you could be on that list
15 Good Reasons you are still unemployed.
“Why am I still
unemployed?”
1. You aren’t networking
enough. Almost all jobs these days are found
through networking. If you’re applying through job boards, searching the
internet, counting on recruiters or responding to want ads.. you’re not doing
enough. And as I’ve said elsewhere, your resume is almost useless.
2. You interview poorly. – We have interviewed few people for a job we have open. While this
is admittedly, a lower-level position, I’m surprised and shocked at how poorly
people interview. Chewing gum, not dressing for the interview, arguing, and
saying what you will and won’t do are all interview killers.
3. You’re pierced – Take out those facial piercings! Younger generation workers – this
really turns off old farts. I won’t hire someone with a facial pierce or
visible tattoo. It is unprofessional.
4. You didn’t shave – don’t go in with one of those “stubble beards” either actually have
beard or be clean-shaven. The people who are probably making the hiring
decision really really hate the three day stubble beards that are the norm
among young men.
5. You’re asking too much
money – Look there’s a great reset” going on.
Salaries are lower these days. We interviewed one person for a $30k job who had
been making $70k. Frankly we are not going to hire someone with that huge of a
salary gap. It isn’t the problem of employers; you have lived beyond your
means. Everyone is tight these days. Don’t go asking for a large salary and
tons of perks. You might as well have to bite the bullet and take much less to
get off of the unemployment rolls.
6. You are very
overqualified. – Realistically, I’m not going to
hire someone with 10+ years of experience with a great deal of responsibility
in their last job for an entry-level job. Entry-level jobs will be filled with
entry-level people. All you do when you apply for these things is annoy the
employer. I know you might be desperate. But it is better to consult or start
you own business, than to apply for entry-level jobs. When i see someone with
an extensive experience applying for an intern job. I’m not even going to
interview you. I know that they’ll be gone in a heartbeat if something if
something in their field comes along, and that they won’t stay and grow in the
company.
7. You smoke. – Many of us won’t hire smokers. The smell on their clothes drives
off customers. They get sick more often. They take excessive breaks. And,
frankly it’s a filthy and disgusting habit. Quit and quit now. You career
future, not to mention your life and health, may depend on it.
8. Your attitude stinks. – You might be coming across as having an arrogant or generally bad
attitude. If someone is not upbeat and positive, i will rapidly end the
interview.
9. You’re depressed. – Many people who have been laid off and can’t find work in a hurry
need anti-depressants. Get on them if you need them. Just be careful which ones
you use. Some depression is normal during a time when you’ve lost your job. But
if you’re always in a dark mood, crying, unmotivated and not sleeping, see you
family doctor at once.
10. You’re angry. – Your anger is not hurting the “jerks” who fired you or laid you
off. It is however, killing you physically and killing your career. Get over
it. Realistically, if you were fired, you most likely deserved it. If you were
laid off, it was nothing personal.. just a business decision. Deal with your
anger before interviewing.
11. You didn’t follow the
directions in the posting. – Do what you’re asked
to do in the job posting or by the hiring authority. If you’re not going to do
what your potential boss asks you to, you’re not going to do what he or she
asks you to when you’re employed, now, are you?
12. You missed an important
piece of the interviewing process. – We asked a
candidate we liked to come to one of our events and meet our clients. She wrote
us an e-mail and said she couldn’t make it, but wanted to continue to the next
phase of interviewing! This woman had posted she had been unemployed for two
years. No wonder.
13. You’re evasive. – if you’re asked a question, answer it. Don’t beat around the
bush, and don’t give stupid canned answers. A clear example of this is number
of people who say, when asked about a weakness, “I guess I’m just too much of a
self-motivated, self-starter who is too hard on himself” stupid answer.
14. You can’t communicate. – Don’t make the interviewer crowbar information out if you. If you can communicate well, you won’t get
employed. If you do happen, by some miracle, to get employed, you won’t last.
15. You’re unprepared. – I’ll be very clear. If you go up against one of my highly
prepared candidate, you’re going to lose and lose big. Don’t be cheap! Hire someone
to help you with interviewing, networking and finding the hidden jobs.
